Tako-tsubo

for SSAA choir a cappella, music by Anthony Ritchie, Opus 169

text by Sue Wootten

The text creates images of breathlessness and panic brought on by a heart attack, while also reflecting on the feelings that are stored within the character.

Listen to Cantus Columba singing Tako tsubo in 2016.

Tako tsubo was commissioned by Columba College in Dunedin for performance by Cantus Columba at The Big Sing, 2013. It is written for high school voices but is also suitable for adult singers.
The title translates in Japanese to "octopus pot" - the shape of the left ventricle of a heart suffering "broken heart syndrome", a heart condition brought on by emotional distress.

The music adopts a lively and quirky mood, although there are moments of repose and reflection as well.
