These songs were commissioned in 2010 by The Jubilate Singers, conductor Grant Hutchison, for a concert of New Zealand music on the theme of New Zealand landscape. The poems by Denis Glover come from his cycle Arawata Bill (1953) based around the life of an old gold miner in the South Island of New Zealand. These poems and their settings are evocative of the southern landscape. The titles are:
Each section in the choir divides into two parts at various points in the score. It can be sung by chamber choirs or larger choirs alike.
