Country and Town was commissioned by Dave Bremner. The piece contrasts the quiet of a rural seaside village with a hustle and bustle of a city. There is plenty of interplay between soloist and band.
The piece opens and closes with the chatter of birdsong, against a gentle waltzing backdrop. The solo trombone enters with an evocation of a distant aeroplane. In the fast middle section the trombone introduces an energetic theme, that is picked up by the band. A more reflective theme provides some respite in the cityscape before a climax leading on to a cadenza for the trombone, accompanied by timpani.
