Why Don't You Talk to Me?

for mezzo soprano and piano, music by Anthony Ritchie, Opus 3d

This song was composed for Ruth Hawkey and Wallace Woodley to go with the Five Songs of Colour which they broadcast in 1981. Like the Five Songs fo Colour, it sets a poem by New Zealander Alistair Campbell, describing a broken relationship. The melancholic outer sections of the song contrast with a lively middle section, describing insects and birds.
